He's nearly 89, has late-stage Alzheimer's and lives in a care home a 40 minute drive away. I try to get over for an hour or so every fortnight, although it's more for me than him, as he doesn't remember my visits and forgets I was there by the time I've signed out at reception.

He does appear to get some comfort from our presence though. Yesterday was particularly strange. Dad has a habit of getting stuck in a loop and he'll repeat the same words, sentence or idea over and over for a few minutes until he spins off into a new sequence. Sometimes he knows who I am; mostly he confuses me with mum. Yesterday he was at peace. I was there, he was there, Clare was there and he was at peace and happy. He told us he'd died several times and come back again but that in the end it didn't matter as he was at peace. He was holding our hands and he was frightened, but it was all OK.

At this point, both Clare and I had shivers down our spines! He's looking wide-eyed across the lounge at things we can't see - his eyesight isn't good these days, but he seemed to be seeing something. And he tells us that all his brothers and sisters are there and that makes him happy. He's one of the youngest of a very large family and I think there are only four of them left.

And then he slept. And Clare and I wondered if he'd wake up again or whether that was it. I like to think he'd stepped very briefly close to the veil, that he's standing closer to it every day, and one day - when he's ready - he'll take that final step across.

Love you, dad xx
Debbie Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06761474820689143835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5561924841201310368.post-25540290547694050622023-08-24T19:22:00.002+01:002023-08-24T19:22:47.318+01:00Aunty Debbie's Advice Column, part 6 of the trilogy
Sixth instalment, eh? Who knew this advice lark could get so exciting? My first agony column (and yes, it really is agony most of the time) was waaay back in 2013. Bad writing has of course been around for much longer than that, but I like to think I've helped so many people better themselves over the years.

I thought it was worth pulling together my occasional agony-aunt column I've written on my monthly post over at AuthorsElectric. I think I achieved very little in the grand scheme of things and certainly no writing of any importance at all. But I have been blogging the story of the dental implant surgery I had last month. It wasn't a good period in my life - it still isn't - and I wanted to help anybody else considering the options I had.

You can read more here. This is a separate page on this blog that I will keep updating until I get to the end of this journey, but I'm keeping it off the menu tabs above as it's not directly related to my writing catalogue - and not everybody wants to see my X-rays!
Debbie Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06761474820689143835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5561924841201310368.post-23568594326951005102022-12-07T08:59:00.000+00:002022-12-07T08:59:24.624+00:00Richard and Judy and Me
Richard & Judy. I remember them as the king and queen of daytime television in the year or so of my life with a small baby when daytime television kept me sane. I don’t know when they stopped presenting This Morning, but these days it’s all about books isn’t it? I’ve not done any Googling or other research to write this, but the R&J book selection seems to be everywhere and being selected pretty much guarantees a book a place on the best-seller lists. Are spots for sale or sponsored in any way? I genuinely have no idea of the integrity of the spaces on this list and I’d be interested to know. Read more ...
Debbie Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06761474820689143835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5561924841201310368.post-11522882253699000912022-12-06T11:15:00.002+00:002022-12-06T11:15:45.444+00:00Life Imitating Art?
Gosh, is it a year since my last blog? To be fair, 2022 has been one of the worst years of my life. My dad's rapid decline into Alzheimer's and moving into residential care, getting their bungalow sold and helping my mum move into sheltered housing, and culminating in facing and dealing with childhood trauma this last couple of months.

I've just got my teeth 'done'. After a childhood accident, I had extensive cosmetic dental work in my teens and early twenties. Now, as I'm approaching 60 at ever-increasing speed, my young, cool and scarily-experienced dentist at my new shiny modern dental practice told me my bridgework was failing and the remaining teeth would not support a simple repair/replace job. So after much discussion, I opted for full dental implants and had the surgery a few days ago. It's not been an easy journey as I've never really dealt with the childhood trauma; I haven't slept properly for a month or more and the whole experience is occupying 95% of my brain right now as I sit on the sofa on sick leave from work and looking like a hamster. I'm seriously considering some counselling in the New Year. Things can only get better!

But the reason for the title of this post is to do with the actual surgery. I opted for for full sedation and was slightly amused when they told me it would be midazolam. In the second book of my series Paying the Piper, that's the drug my bad guys use to sedate Michael when they have to take him into town to meet with other bad guys. I researched delivery methods and effects and I'm pleased to say I got it spot-on! One syringe into the cannula in my elbow and I felt like I was two bottles of wine down on a good night out. Apparently I had another two syringes and I don't remember anything of the first couple of hours. Andy says he could see my blood pressure dropping as the stuff was going in, which considering my BP was probably stratospheric at the start, can only be a good thing! After that I was conscious and I recall vague snippets of conversation and things happening, but I wasn't the least bit bothered by any of it - it was like watching a movie.

So a drastic way to do research. But why let an experience go to waste? I might as well let something positive come out of it. At least I got it right as I'd hate having to do a rewrite! Onwards and upwards.
Debbie Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06761474820689143835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5561924841201310368.post-19965994040109899592021-12-06T17:56:00.002+00:002021-12-06T17:56:32.616+00:00Blogging Arvon
Scary stories read out loud late at night in a big old barn. No surprises there. It was OK, I suppose – I’d probably give it a 3-4 on Amazon if I left a review. It was readable, certainly. Not unputdownable (if that’s even a word) and it didn’t have a twist-I-wouldn’t-see-coming. Or did it?

I can’t review this book. Because if I did, I’d have to say what I liked/didn’t like. And what I didn’t like would be a massive spoiler and unfair on the author and future readers. It’s published by Thomas & Mercer, which I believe is Amazon’s own publishing arm? All the more reason not to put spoilers in reviews!

You see, the twist-I-wouldn’t-see-coming should have been obvious for anyone with half a brain to work out – if the author had played fair with the reader. And by playing fair, I mean been transparent, let the reader properly experience the story through the eyes of the characters as it unfolds. In this novel, we have 3 distinct points of view so we ought to be completely inside the heads of 3 different characters. Since all 3 characters interact closely throughout the story, I’d expect – as the reader – to be fully immersed in exactly how the each POV-character is thinking and feeling in relation to the other 2 characters. But I’m not. It’s only in the final pages of the book that I realise that one character has done something pivotal to turn the story on its head. Thinking back, I can see that there is a clue (although it’s planted quite far on in the book, which doesn’t seem fair), BUT the character doesn’t think about this AT ALL throughout the entire novel. Not until the last two pages.

Now, I’m not a psychologist, but I’m pretty sure that if I was plotting to kill somebody. I’d be thinking about it constantly. Day and night. Anything written from my perspective would have to include those thoughts – especially if somebody else gets there first and murders my prospective victim! At the very least, I’d be thankful that somebody saved me the job and at least nobody will suspect me now! And to not even hint at it at all via the character’s thoughts is cheating the character and cheating the reader. Not fair.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I’m reading a book about a boy. It’s a new paperback – I picked it up in Waterstones as part of a buy-one-get-one-half-price deal. I got up to page 6 and was tempted to throw the book across the room.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Why? Because the title says boy, the blurb says little boy and the cover shows a picture of a young (white Caucasian) boy. With all the references, I think it’s safe to assume that the cover is meant to depict the boy in question. But page 6, and the protagonist is pondering the ethnicity of the boy in question as he is so dark-skinned.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">So why is our cover model white? Dark haired yes, and not white white. But clearly of Caucasian origin. Do the publishers think the book will sell more copies if the cover shows a white person? Does it matter? I think it does, yes. I read a lot of articles campaigning for more culturally-diverse fiction and I think it’s important – especially for children – to be able to read about characters ‘like’ themselves, to identify with them and maybe aspire to be like them. I’m not far enough into this book yet to know whether said boy’s ethnic origins are important to the story, but since it’s important enough to mention and important enough to wonder about, it ought to be important enough to find a child for the cover that at least looks the part.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I’m not saying that all book covers should replicate the story in minute detail. God knows I’ve seen enough bad covers where the author has insisted on having a dragon, a sword, a red-headed female warrior, a magical artefact and a wizard with stars on his cape (because that’s what the story is about, don’t you know?) – and the result is cluttered, amateur and frankly silly. A cover is meant to convey genre, give you a hint of the style of the book and entice you to read the blurb and then the opening paragraph. But since the cover of my book is just a boy, why on earth couldn’t it be a dark-skinned boy?<span style="font-family: "times new roman";">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I'm leading a workshop on writing science fiction at the end of this month. Check out this link for more information and details of how to book a place. I don't think the photograph is very flattering though!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">For anybody who's come here via the link from Oldham Library - hello. While I mostly write crime and thriller fiction these days, I started out my writing career in the sf and fantasy genre and I've published a lot of short fiction, and a fantasy novel. If you want to check some of it out, have a look at my short story collection Maniac & Other Stories. You can probably even read a couple for free as part of the 10% sample online or on your ereader, so it won't even cost you anything ... If you've signed up for the workshop, feel free to email me at the address in the panel on the right and I'll send you an advance link to a page of resources that I plan to make available after the workshop.Debbie Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06761474820689143835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5561924841201310368.post-69858717594194284332018-10-22T17:34:00.002+01:002018-10-22T17:38:30.348+01:00Alchemy Launch

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Alchemy Press book launch in Chester on Saturday. I seem to be sharing a name with Tina Rath, but I'm the one on the right in a rather lovely little velvet dress I bought just for the weekend. The book is a horror anthology - but I don't write horror. Really, I don't. And don't let the name put you off; this is a collection of dark, strange and weird tales. Mine is called The Fairest of Them All and if you couldn't guess from the title, it's about mirrors ... The rest of the stories are pretty good, too!
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">You can get the book here.

In case you were wondering.

In reality, I've been somewhat tied up with other events these past nine months or so. We sold the house in the summer - one of the hardest things we've done and yet also one of the best. We were stagnating, marking time, not wanting to leave our beautiful custom-renovated cottage. Now we have downsized and it's not been easy, but we are through the worst of it, I think, and ready to move on. And I don't miss the view - I really don't.

We also bought a small flat in the village, which has doubled as a large storage container so far, but is another project we have on the go. Not sure what we'll do with it once it's finished - rent it, maybe? Or sell it. Or sell this house and move into it? Who knows?

In the meantime, writing has taken a backseat. But I did a writers' fair last Saturday. And of course it's FantasyCon later this month which is always good for kick-starting the creative side of my brain. And I've just agreed to do a radio slot next week, for which I need to find some appropriate music.

So in the spirit of music-for-writing, here's a link to a post I wrote years back which deserves another airing in anticipation: The Undercover Soundtrack.
It's all happening this Autumn. November will finally see the launch of the White Witch project that I've been involved with for so long. This is a DVD in which Olive Hawthorn, the White Witch of the title, recounts her life since the days of the Daemons and her encounter with the mysterious man known as The Doctor. Olive is played by Damaris Hayman, the original actress who appeared in the 1971 tv adventure The Daemons and the episodes were written by myself and other writers.

In addition to the DVD, there will be a book - a novelisation of the film scripts, which is published by Telos Publishing. This expands on the stories on the DVD and is proving to be a collector's item already, judging by the number that have already sold on pre-order via the Telos website.

The DVD and book launch at Forbidden Planet in London on November 10th - click the link for more details. On 11th November, we'll be at Galaxy Four in Sheffield and on Sunday 12th, we hope to be at Waterstones in the Arndale Centre, Manchester. Damaris herself will be at some of the events, as will the film's producer and director Keith Barnfather and some/all of the other writers and editors.

So if you're around those venues in November, pop in and pick yourself up a signed DVD and/or book. Or say hello. Or both!

I'm thrilled to be involved in something with a Dr Who link. It's such an iconic series with legions of fans of all ages around the world. Even people who don't watch it now, or have never watched it at all, have at least heard of it. It's amazing to be a part of it.Debbie Bennetthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06761474820689143835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5561924841201310368.post-80232170947728434212017-08-21T16:40:00.000+01:002017-08-21T16:40:06.757+01:00White WitchSo the White Witch project is finally moving again. This began life way back in 2012 when I was commissioned to write a short film script for Reeltime Pictures - a spin-off from an early 1970s Dr Who Episode The Daemons and starring the original actress Damaris Hayman.

Script delivered and all went quiet for a while for a variety of reasons. But now I've signed a contract for the story in the accompany anthology (to be published by Telos Ltd) and things are moving forwards. A couple of weeks ago, I went to Lincoln to record a short interview for Reeltime Pictures, the story is delivered and there's music by Linzi Gold - and we're all set for a release in November 2017.

You can pre-order the DVDs from Galaxy Four.
I tracked down Jan in her writing cave in the wilds of the West Midlands and persuaded her to answer some really, really important questions:

Where would you hide the bodies?

Under someone
else’s patio? In a volcano? Dissolve it in acid? This is a tricky question!

I guess the best way would be to destroy it as
comprehensively as possible and dispose of the rest as far away as possible
from the murder site – preferably in a different country.

To be more serious, modern forensics make things
pretty tough if the body is found. The tiniest spot of bodily fluid or matter
is potentially identifiable and CCTV and tracking on smartphones makes it hard
to go anywhere unnoticed.

Reliable scientific/lab work in the 1940s, beyond fingerprinting and detection
of poisons etc, was basic. In a time when few people had telephones, let alone
tablets and smartphones, the emphasis was always weighted toward eye witnesses.

There
are only so many new stories and you can argue that every story has been done
before. And yes, I do see that attraction of Girl on a Train. It’s a good read, but for me there were so many
tropes shared with Rear Window, and
or course Agatha Christie’s 4.40 From
Paddington, that it didn’t feel it was fresh enough to become a firm
favourite with me. So it’s Poirot every time. The classic whodunnit is always
tough to beat.

Do you have music playing when you write and if so

Not
always but yes, I do often have something in the background. Usually something
instrumental, or instrument heavy, otherwise I get caught up in the lyrics and
lose track of what I am writing. Driving rock for the action pieces or
psychedelia or folky based music for the more cerebral or quieter parts. I did
get some 1940s CDs for Winter Downs to
immerse myself in the period

I have a fairly eclectic taste in music generally,
so choosing a few tracks would always be hard. But if I am following on from Q2
then I have a selection of albums – yes, I am that old fashioned – that I play
when writing because they are often instrumental or are so familiar that I
don’t need to listen to the lyrics. Muse (good driving rock for writing
action); Rick Wakeman’s Journey to the
Centre of the Earth – for the same reasons as Muse; Liquid Sound Company -
psychedelic rock that allows me to drift
Garden; Tea Party; Kirsty McColl, Steeleye Span; Fairport Convention;
Jethro Tull; Robert Plant; Shooglenifty... there are many more. I don’t much like crooners or the pseudo soul
that passes for R&B these days which means pretty much anything that might
win X Factor is out for me :-) That and boy bands!

Genre:
Zombies, if they can be seen as a genre? Because a/ real zombies are not
re-animated corpses and b/ zombies that eat brains are rather limited in scope.

Cliche: ‘damaged’ cops (especially on TV). It’s
come to a point where every cop is not just a maverick but a borderline basket

Is there one subject you would never write about as

Porn?
Sports? Hunting Aardvarks in Antarctica?
I don’t think I could do Mills & Boon style romances any justice
purely because that style of novel just isn’t my thing. I can see how it is a
very hard thing to do well; i.e. without coming over as really cheesy. The same
would apply to my writing a Western or a shoes’n’shopping novel. All genres
have their invisible cloaks of verisimilitude and any readers of those books
will always spot a faker.

But genres are not the same as subjects; of which
few are totally off limits. Taboos can be dealt with if you approach them in
the right way and do enough research so that what you saying is both correct
and credible. There are a few subjects I would probably shy away from purely on
the grounds that I don’t feel qualified to write about them with any authority

That is
almost impossible to answer. Taken at face value Noddy, whose best friend is a gnome would count as fantasy...

Looking at more adult fiction? Back in the late 60s
fiction tended to leap from children’s to adult with little YA or Teen fiction
in between so I read a lot of the westerns bought by my (elder) brothers, discovering
Michael Moorcock’s Count Brass and Corum books, which sent me down the
fantasy route. They were so very different from anything else I had ever read.
The specific genre they came under at the time was Science Fantasy, which is
not a term you hear any more.

Other books that made an impact at the time were
Tolkien’s LOTR and Carrol’s Alice, which are both technically
fantasy, though Alice would probably
be called Urban Fantasy had it been written now as the contemporary fiction it
was in 1865. These books were all
required reading for the budding hippy circa 1968!
